THE 2000 BORDEAUX VINTAGE
The 2000 Bordeaux vintage is being heralded as the greatest Bordeaux vintage ever by the experts. Here is what they have said:
Robert Parker
"The finest 2000s possess the most impressive length, structure, concentration, and delineation that I have experienced in 23 years of tasting new Bordeaux vintages. Additionally, the vintage appears to be remarkably consistent...there are superb wines in all appellations!"
"...from the cru bourgeois to the petits chateaux...wines are extraordinarily powerful, concentrated, and dense, with dazzling levels of extract, high tannin, good acidity levels, and formidable concentration as well as length."
"And no one should forget that this vintage marks something that comes once every thousand years...a chronological milestone."
"Given the superlative quality of many lesser known wines...frugal consumers could easily stock an entire cellar from these regions with sumptuous wines rated 88 and above that will retail for well under $20 a bottle."
Declaring it " a monumental vintage, and undoubtedly the greatest year Bordeaux has ever experienced ", Parker has awarded significantly upgraded scores to wines in all price and status categories throughout the region.
James Suckling
"The best 2000 Bordeaux are going to be remembered as the new classics for a new millennium. Outstanding reds in 2000 have sexy aromas of ripe fruit, earth and spices, just like the 1982s, yet on the palate they are racy, fresh and tannic, like the 1986s. These glorious reds from 2000 are wines that you can only find in Bordeaux. They are postmodern classic wines, what I believe is the greatest wine region on earth."
"The Medoc can do no wrong. All the major appellations - including Margaux, St. Julien and St. Estephe - made killer wines."
Bill Blatch
"With such healthy and uniformly ripe grapes this year, one could do just about anything one wanted with the wines.
For the first time since 1985, the Cabernet Franc vats are truly great on their own; infinite finesse, yet total ripeness.
As in 1986 or 1996, this is quite clearly a Cabernet year on the Left Bank."
Steven Spurrier
"My overall view of 2000 on the Left Bank is that it is a landmark vintage, where in almost every case a perfect harvest was handled in a
sophisticated manner to produce great wines that are stylistically true, finely balanced and made for keeping. I think that their reputation is just beginning."
James Lawther
"Overall... there's a wealth of good drinking on the Right Bank."
