Commanderie de Bordeaux History


The Brotherhood began in the year 1952

There are 18 brotherhoods that were created by the wine-growers from the different wine areas of Bordeaux to uphold and promote their various appellations, which constitute the diversity of Bordeaux's wines. Membership range from 20 to 50 members in each botherhood.

Each brotherhood has its own identity and has no formal link, such as a charter, between them. The main factor uniting these brotherhood is that they all belong to the magical region of Bordeaux.

With the support of the Bordeaux Brotherhoods, the Grand Conseil du Vin de Bordeaux helped create commanderies all over the world. These initiatives are not of a commercial nature. They revolve solely around human realtionships; receptions, wine-tasting sessions, inductions, etc. The sole purpose of estibilishing the Commanderies around the world is to promote Bordeaux wines and to act as ambassadors in each respective countries.

La Commanderie

Today there are 58 Commanderies world-wide with eight located in Canada. The Commanderie shall adhere to the traditions and standards of the Grand Conseil du Vin de Bordeaux in France which has for its purpose the undestanding of the wines of Bordeaux.

The objectives of the Commanderie are as follows:

  • To pay homage to the wines of Bordeaux and to instill respect and appreciation for such wines and to encourage their consumption in moderation.
  • To promote the preparation of dishes and viands for which the wines of Bordeaux constitute the most suitable accompaniment.
  • To promote and foster friendly relations among members of the Commanderie.
  • To honour the history and the traditions of the Chateaux and the great wines of the region of Bordeaux, and to promote a good knowledge of these.
  • To organize and encourage meetings, wine tastings, dinners and other occassions for the enjoyments and comparison of the wines of Bordeaux.
  • To the extend permitted by law, to do all things as may be desirable, necessary or useful for the accomplishment of the foregoing purposes and for the continued existence of the Commanderie.

Today, Michel-Pierre Massonie is the Grand Maître of the Grand Conseil des Vins de Bordeaux. His role is to represent the prestige of the wines of Bordeaux throughout the world.

Calgary

The Commanderie de Bordeaux a Calgary began in 1977 and adheres to the principals setout by the Grand Conseil du Vin de Bordeaux. The current Maître of the Calgary chapter is Greg Stebbe.
